I've never heard of this Croatian band before, but this is their third full-length, though ironically their second full-length was never released, as it was recorded digitally and a malfunction of some sort lost the files forever. Which brings us to this rather strong effort having been recorded entirely using analog means, so it sounds nice and natural and lays a solid foundation for their largely instrumental brand of moody and melodic music. In many ways they're slightly similar to their labelmates and fellow Croatians in Don't Mess With Texas, as this music seems to be inspired by both the emo/indie rock scene as well as more of a lush and lightly experimental sort of droning modern rock twist (think hints of Coldplay, Radiohead, etc.), so the compositions tend to be fairly calm and restrained, but there are some bits and pieces that get a little more intense and rhythmic. "Pizza Song" is among the only tunes that has some distant vocals that are sort of quietly spoken/sung, but despite some unfortunate song titles the aesthetic of the music is actually quite emotional, and the lyrics (which are not included since there are almost no vocals) seem to be serious as well. I'm not really a big fan of bands using silly song titles like "Pizza Song" or "Retard Numerique" (among others) when the characteristics of their music are much more moving and serious, but I can easily overlook it in this case because I really like what these guys are doing. Lunar is definitely a fitting band name for the group, as there's somewhat of a spacey quality happening at times, especially when the music is a little less traditional and the use of effects on the guitars gets a little heavier. "Radio Free Interference" is definitely darker, opening with more of an ambient undercurrent and using some samples before proceeding into a slow march that has a really somber atmosphere lingering about, eventually building into a louder and more gripping display of instrumentation. "My Moon" follows and is also a slightly longer than average piece, keeping the slower and more somber feel and bringing in some effects over the percussion to add some additional depth to the composition. Among the more indie rock sounding material are songs such as "Davorova Grana", which is probably the most openly discordant track in its use of jagged chord phrasings and layers of both clean and distorted guitars. The last song, "Bee-Bop", is the only one I'm not fond of, as its brief 1:40 running time and use of spoken samples over electronic sounding beats just feels out of place amidst such beautiful songwriting elsewhere. The production sounds pretty damn good to me, though. There's a lot of brightness to some of the drumming as well as the guitars, so there's a nice high-end ring going on over the punchy kick drums and plodding basslines, which both offer plenty of density to keep things in place. It's a really crisp and warm mix that lets all of the details shine through. A lot of times the guitar in the left channel feels a little louder than the guitar in the right channel, but that does kind of give the bass more breathing room, and it places more emphasis on the interaction between guitar lines and swirling effects, which is a nice touch. There's not much going on visually, as it's mainly just red and blue textures with some star shapes and consistent text throughout the design for the credits and tracklist. It looks pretty good, though. This is a very nice piece of work. The band has a real knack for writing compositions that are repetitious and build around a theme without getting boring at all. I have to say though, despite the fact that they know how to handle themselves as an almost entirely instrumental unit, I'd like to hear them bring vocals in more often, as their strongest and most moving melodies could be made even more emotional with the right vocal performances. Who knows? Good work either way. This is another obscure band that deserves far more attention, so I hope that international boundaries won't harm them in that regard. Very nice.

[Notable tracks: Pizza Song, Radio Free Interference, Davorova Grana]

This record immediately reminds me of early Explosions In The Sky. But listening to the whole cd, variety comes in. The atmospheric post-rock makes place for more up-tempo rock with sparse vocals (which are quite good, though most songs are instrumental). Saying Lunar's just a rip-off, your thirteenth in a dozen post-rockband, would be a bullshit thing to do. They've been around for quite some time now and you could call them one of Europe's best in its genre. Although post-rockers aren't quite as hot as a few years ago, Lunar keep their head up and do what they're still good at. No compromises, analog und ehrlich.

PUNK INTERNATIONAL | www.punkinternational.com | written in English

Lots of instrumental indie rock is really eccentric, mathy, just generally erratic. Most of the time it just seems that lyrics and vocals could never feasibly be part of the music. Croatia's Lunar is something of an exception. It's not that they play elementary 4/4 rock and roll without singing, but "Turbo" has a steady pace to it and a beat you can nod your head to. It's refreshing, and I'd say about as universally enjoyable as music gets, because nobody can say they just wish the singer would shut up.

Granted, Lunar inevitably lose some of the personality that comes along with a distinct vocalist and gifted lyricist, and the fact that their music doesn't boast a lot of idiosyncrasies means they're fighting an uphill battle to reach listeners and keep them hooked. If you do give them a spin, and I recommend you do if you like such groups as Mogwai or Tortoise, I think they'll make a convincing case. Their textures and soundscapes are no amateur designs, and their rock and roll drive is impossible to disagree with.

BROKEN VIOLENCE | www.brokenviolence.de | written in German

Ein guter Zeitpunkt für Lunar, fortan wieder ausschließlich auf analoges Aufnahme-Equipment zu vertrauen: "In keeping true to the spirit, they bought the biggest fucking analog recorder in the world." Their third full-length, and first for the Moonlee Records, is named "Turbo" because that"s how it sounds. Gigantic and great. An appropriate title for mostly instrumental music which consists of dynamic and propulsive rhythms interwoven with delicate guitars. "Turbo" is a sound of wandering through nebula or a soundtrack for the solar eclipse. Turbo is a mysterious space travel followed by a pleasant return to earth. However, it may be something completely different. As it is already said, one should rather listen and hear it."

And here comes another release from Moonlee Records from Slovenia. Till I get this CD I had no idea about the Slovenian and Croatian music scene, but now I know that there are great bands. LUNAR was born in 1998 in Croatia. After realising their debut album "there is no 1" 2000 on Carnival Tunes Records and Delboy Records, they played in the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia & Montenegro and Germany. So maybe you know the band already. After that they wanted to release their second CD "First and Last Lost", but the digital machinery containing the record's files broke down. There was no backup and so the LP was lost. But now they are back with a new CD. "Turbo" is complete instrumental, just a few spoken parts. Only drums, guitars, bass and sometimes some samples or other gimmicks. That's all (the guys really know how to use their instruments). With these ingredients LUNAR builds a great atmosphere, which is perfect for a quite evening. "Turbo" sounds like APPLESEED CAST or THE DECEMBER DRIVE, but without the singing and screaming. Great Post-Rock from Croatia. I've really enjoyed this album.

CRACKED | www.monochrom.at/cracked | written in English

Lunar are another band to bring the "rock" back into postrock (by the way, thanks a lot) as well as some noise and some slow and soft plus the tendency to play epics condensed into a few minutes of song. Mostly instrumental the band picks up speed gently, using different details and ideas to add to their simplistically constructed songs. Most of the time the musicians seem to have their music and instruments under complete control, carefully guiding them along the lines and pathways defined beforehand. So much though, that at times you wish they'd cut it loose a little. And they will, at times, but always take it back again.

The title of this record, "turbo", gives away only half of the truth. Admittedly, Lunar are able to churn out some forceful songs that go straight ahead into their intended direction, but there are also a lot of slow and delicate moments laid bare and open on this record. "Belka I Strelka" for instance builds up around a simple line of four notes only that grows from soft and gentle indie-strumming to a hill of music where the wind blows heavy but the view is exciting. The abrupt end of the song is a bit of a letdown though, because imagining where it could have gone from there is a real thrill. So I wonder if Lunar only recorded abbreviated versions of their songs for this record or if they could be coerced into playing 15-minute mountain-dinosaur-versions of them live.

Moreover, the record starts with gentle reverbs and picked notes on a heavily distorted guitar. True, it could go anywhere from there, mostly because this intro reminds me a lot of what Neurosis play before they break into their customary patented full-force noise-tornadoes. Lunar, on the other hand, take the intensity back again even more, introducing a few noisy guitar sounds and then stop the song to get to the next one. Don't get me wrong, that introductory track "grabador grande" is beautiful, intricate and delicately recorded, full of warm, empty spaces and echoes of nice dreams. But for a record called "turbo" the element of losing control, letting go and burning rubber is definitely missing. I can actually see them counting along while they play. Oh wait, that is the same badmouthing that postrock always used to get: too much math! Well not Lunar, because they are surely not folks to get too theoretical on their music; it has too much organism and body for that.

The singing on "Pizza Song" – the only song with actual vocals on it – reminds me a lot of Muse, to be honest. But that is not a bad thing in itself, not at all. But it makes me wonder if Lunar were looking for a hitsingle to be played on alternative stations. That would be a surprise to any buyer who knows nothing but the single and then gets an album of instrumentals. Well, singles don't have to be representative in any way, and there is always the possibility of being a trained and attentive consumer and take a listen into what you are buying. Hell, I see a lot of people at the big electro-tv-video-cd-store in my vicinity listening to each and every track of maxi-CDs by chart-acts such as Robbie Williams or Kelis (who has for instance has "Trick Me" and seven remixes on her single, what a drag…), but those might all be suffering from some strange form of compulsive-obsessive mistrust-disorder. Thinking about it, I prefer people not afraid of taking chances when buying records, and actually, everyone who picks up this one by chance, mistake or whatever unintentional reason is rewarded greatly.

Of course, Lunar and their label are in close connections to other bands from their area (counting all of ex-yugoslavia and wider parts of Central Europa as "their area"), such as Gone Bald, Don't Mess with Texas and Radio Free Isaac. All in all I think that Lunar is not a band a lot of people will go berserk about, creating websites and fanpools, writing them love-letters or having their logo tattoed on their necks, but rather one of the many bands that a lot of people get to know and like and listen to - because that is what they are really best at: being listened to – but a lot more won't. After all, to spend fifty minutes with a good CD is better than a lot of other things imaginable. Finally, I am thinking that I should re-arrange my introductory sentence to: "Lunar, bringing back the rock into postpunk."

MUNNEZZA | www.munnezza.it | written in Italian

Geboten wird dynamischer Gitarrensound irgendwo zwischen Muse und Elliot mit einem Schuss ...and you will know us by the Trail Of Dead. (rg)

HALO 17 | www.halo-17.net | written in English

European rockers Lunar have knocked out a frustratingly good album in Turbo - frustrating because although it is good, it could have been so much better but for a few things which let it down.

Turbo isn't so much post-rock as it is post-garage-rock, half way between Mogwai and Magic Dirt, which makes it mellow and melancholic like most good post-rock, but less epic, more straight forward. Tracks like Belka I Strelka especially contribute to this feeling, and you can almost imagine Adalita's voice cutting in at any moment with some teen angsty lyrics. That's not to say Turbo is simplistic - it has all the musicality of a good Mogwai album, just less ambitiously styled, with bite-sized pieces rather than album-long meandering sound scapes. Then you hit tracks like Radio Free Interference, which with volume loud and bass up is as driving and forceful as any Mogwai power ballad, but weighing in at under six minutes it is much more digestible than your standard post-rock epic.

However the shortness of the songs on this album, as well as the brevity of the album itself, is one of the problems with Turbo. Good post-rock picks you up and carries you somewhere, but Turbo is too abbreviated to do that well, reaching crescendos without sufficient build up and moving on to the next track before you've finished experiencing this one. It's more like a post-rock sampler than a post-rock album, and lasting just over forty seven minutes it's almost an EP, despite its eleven tracks. Davorova Grana is the biggest culprit: opening with solid bass which eventually underlies the most intriguing guitar riff on the album, Davorova Grana has the potential to be a knock-out track, but it cuts off prematurely at under three minutes.

What there is of Turbo is for the most part really good, and there is no filler as such. However there are two tracks which seriously bug me. Pizza Song, the second track on the album, is a perfectly fine song, but it doesn't belong on Turbo; the lyrics lift this out of post-rock and drop it back into garage rock, and it disturbs the flow of the album, especially if like me you pop Turbo on repeat due to its short length. Don't get me wrong, it is not a bad song, just out of place. Bee-Bop, which closes the album, is annoying for similar reasons: after knocking out an album of emotive, expressive guitar rock, why would you want to sign off with a minute and a half of synthesised electro-pop? It is incongruous in the extreme.

For all my griping though, I really enjoyed Turbo. Pieces like Radio Free Interference and Retard Numerique - the stand out tracks on the album - show you that Lunar have a great sound, and a fantastic songwriting ability. The problem with Turbo isn't that there is actually anything really wrong with it, it's just that there isn't enough of it. In any post-rock release, six eight minute tracks is a lot better than eleven four minute tracks, and if Lunar begin to stretch out their songs and pace them for a longer musical experience, we could see them rise to the top of their genre - they certainly have the skill.

Turbo is a good album, and a hint of far better things to come from Lunar.

SEMTEX | www.semtexinc.com | written in English

Lunar was born in 1998 in Croatia and is closely related to bands as Gone Bald, Bojan, Don't Mess With Texas and Radio Free Isaac. Their debut album "There Is No 1" was released by Carnival Tunes and Delboy in 2000. Their second album "First And Last Lost" was supposed to be released by the same record labels. However, the digital machinery containing the record's files broke down. No backup was found and the record was lost forever. Shortly thereafter – according to the onesheet accompanying this cd – "Lunar bought the biggest fucking analog recorder in the world".

This third full length is named "Turbo". The cd version is released by the excellent Moonlee Records (Analena, Don't Mess With Texas) out of Slovenia. The vinyl version of this album is done by the Belgian friendly all-round collective Vlas Vegas.

Lunar brings music that needs some time and attention to unfold its true beauty. "Turbo" is mainly instrumental and unties a dynamic and sometimes mysterious sound. The base for that mix is made up by drums, guitars and bass backed up by some atmospheric resonance and samples when appropriate. But this album never is a flight into the timeless and unknown. The crescendos mostly fold out into a steady rocking song. And that's the thing I love about "Turbo". Just when the experimentalism starts to grow and the band apparently loses touch with the ground, they're throwing in this dynamic rocking riffing and rhythm.

When listening to this third full length by Lunar, I've always felt a connection with The Appleseed Cast. Especially the first song on this disc called "Il Grabador Grande" tends towards The Appleseed Cast. And when I say The Appleseed Cast, we're getting close to bands as Modest Mouse or Mogwai. But I wouldn't push it that far for Lunar. They're more rock and less athmospheric. But anyway, if you're into this type of post rock you'll be happy to discover Lunar.

I've really enjoyed this album. This just has a way about it. "Turbo" has beautiful song structures, dissonant guitars, steady rock pieces and dense atmospherics. When added up, you've got yourself a more than good product. Thumbs up.

Iskustva ne nedostaje ni Lunaru kojemu je "Turbo", ako ne računamo u digitalnoj havariji zauvijek izgubljen "First and Last Lost", drugi album.

Takrat je šlo za eleganten "There is no 1", tukaj pa že imam svežo "Turbo" zgoščenko. Kdor je preposlušal dosti post-rocka bo vedel kako so si tovrstni bendi sila podobni, ampak Lunar so si v svojih šestih letih trdega dela ustvarili svoj teritorij.

ŽVPL | www.zvpl.com | written in Slovenian

So obrnili hrbet tradiciji in postali vokalni bend?

HOMBRE | www.hombrezone.com | written in Croatian

Već spomenutu "Pizza Song" gost Vlado delikatnim vokalom diže do sazviježđa koja svojim "kozmo" štihom band inače toliko priziva, a moji osobni favoriti "Radio Free Interference" i "My Moon" su impresivna i pedantna sinteza "epike i lirike". "Retard Numerique" pak nosi uvjerljiv iskaz gotovo bolećive melankolije, a ugođajem joj je srodna i "Alpa", krasan i razgovijetan komad ranjivog pop transa.

Album There Is No 1, njihov prvenec iz leta 2000, je požel precej pozitivnih kritik in bil logičen povod za močno koncertno aktivnost skupine.

Ostali člani postave Lunar so Davor, Bojan in Nixa, ki z bobni, basom in dvema električnima kitarama tvorijo klasično post-rockovsko instrumentalno osnovo.

Album Turbo je logično nadaljevanje prvenca There Is No 1, čeprav bi nam uvodni komad dal misliti, da se bodo Lunar tokrat odpravili v bolj ambientalne vode.

V naslednjih minutah boste poslušali celoten album, z izjemo zadnjega komada. Komadi z morda nekoliko zavajajočimi naslovi v razmerju do razpoloženja albuma se bodo zvrstili v naslednjem zaporedju: Il Grabador Grande, Pizza Song, Dancefloor Žgaba, Belka I Strelka, Radio Free Interference , My Moon , Alpa , Retard Numerique , Davorova Grana , Tgemolo in Bee-Bop.

ADDICTED TO NOTHING | www.atnzine.org | written in Slovenian

No ovitek in vizualije niso ravno najmočnejša stran CDja, vendar me to v tem primeru bolj malo briga.

Soundtrack For The Solar Eclipse

I ugodno iznenadio.

U tom su periodu nastala dva albuma "There Is No 1" i "First And Last Lost".

TERAPIJA | www.terapija.net | written in Croatian

Projicira mentalne slike, rekao bih.

* Lunar su Bojan, Nixa, Davor i Mijo
* postoje od 1998. g.
* 2000.-te izdaju spomenuti "There is No. 1" za Carnival / Delboy Records
* naredni album "First And Last Lost" je nepovratno izgubljen zbog digitalnih poteškoća
* "Turbom" se vraćaju analognom načinu rada, te dodao bi, u velikom stilu natrag na diskografsku scenu

Kao što njihov press materijal slikovito ističe, "Turbo is a sound of wandering through nebula or a soundtrack for the solar eclipse. Turbo is a mysterious space travel followed by a pleasant return to Earth. However, it may be something completely differnet."

Čak vjerujem u to...
